Abstract
For a period of nearly two decades in the inter-war period the overriding fact of economic life was the seeming intractability of long-term unemployment in the face of control techniques which had originally evolved during the very different conditions of the late nineteenth century. Then in 1936 Keynes published his General Theory which demonstrated seemingly for all time that unemployment was an unnecessary evil which it was within the powers of any enlightened government to eradicate more or less in its entirety.
