Abstract
In the foregoing chapter reference was made to the fact that some cases of malocclusion require, as part of their treatment, the extraction of permanent teeth. The extent to which this is practised varies from one operator to another. The necessity for extraction of permanent teeth may also vary from one country to another as racial characteristics may have an important bearing. In the United Kingdom it has been found that extractions are frequently required as part of treatment and for this reason a separate chapter has been devoted to the consideration of this aspect. The decision as to where and when to extract can only be made with accuracy after considerable experience has been acquired. There are, however, some general principles which will offer guidance.
