Abstract

The word orthodontics is derived from the Greek words ὁρθός meaning right or correct, and ὁδόντoς meaning tooth. Although etymologically this term is quite correct, it is in fact an inadequate description of the subject as it is conceived today. The following definition is as practical as any:

‘Orthodontics is the study of growth and development of the masticatory apparatus, and the prevention and treatment of abnormalities of this development.’
