The inertia forces and couples produced by the accelerations of machine members have been discussed in chapter 6 for a wide variety of mechanisms. It should be clear that in the majority of machines such forces cannot be avoided and must be taken into account when designing the members, the bearing surfaces and the foundations. The severity of the inertia loading increases as the square of the running speed, so that for high-speed machinery the effects can be very objectionable, often resulting in vibrations, noise emission and premature failure of a fatigue nature.
