Abstract
The aim of this chapter is not to review the special properties of lake benthos in a community context, but to pull together study techniques and concepts that can be applied in work on the benthos. These approaches have seen accelerated development over the last 20 years through research on a variety of terrestrial and aquatic communities. Since the field is again as broad as the subject matter in the rest of this volume, the chapter will be a compendium of methods and ideas rather than a detailed review of all subjects dealt with.
