Abstract

The reaction of an intruder from another planet on seeing the human landscape of this earth for the first time might well be very similar to that of Alice on realising that she was opening out into the ‘largest telescope that ever was’. Concrete or redbrick jungles of people and their industries appear as aliens in the natural environment, which they are increasingly converting into an apparently formless, chaotic and often polluted or congested landscape system, in which problems of scarcity, growth and development occur in conjunction with problems of surplus, stagnation and decline.
