Abstract

All the statistical tests described in the previous chapters have only involved simple arithmetic and elementary algebra. The more advanced statistical procedures require more advanced mathematics, such as matrix algebra, and would nowadays always be calculated using a computer (see Cooley and Lohnes, 1962, 1971; Overall and Klett, 1972). This text is not the place for their full mathematical treatment or description, which can be found in Miller and Kahn (1962), Krumbein and Graybill (1965), Koch and Link (1970, 1971) and Davis (1973), who devote the largest part of their books to deriving and giving worked examples of the application of more advanced statistical procedures to earth science data.
