Abstract
The addition of a catalyst to a chemical reaction increases the rate of reaction. Catalysts are very important in chemical industry, where their use can increase the efficiency of a chemical process and decrease the overall cost to the manufacturer. It is therefore not surprising that much time and considerable resources have been devoted to the discovery of new and better catalysts. Despite this the mechanisms of many catalysed reactions are not well understood, and many of the catalysts used in chemical industry were discovered by trial and error rather than by fundamental research.
