Abstract

The problem I am concerned with this evening is to measure the cost of a child to a family. We all know that three cannot live as cheaply as two, but it would be valuable to know how much more a couple needs to be as well off as they would be if there were no child.

A past version of this paper was read before the Manchester Statistical Society on 8th December, 1948.
