The Clutch

  • Chapter
The Car

Abstract

The clutch is a coupling between the engine and the gearbox which may be foot-operated or automatic in operation and is normally spring-loaded in the engaged position. Unless automatic it is operated by a pedal with the driver’s left foot. When the pedal is depressed the engine is disconnected from the gearbox and driving wheels, allowing the gears in the gearbox to be engaged or disengaged as desired.
