Abstract

The excerpts which follow are taken from Alexander d’Entrèves’s book ‘The Notion of the State’. lou will see that he deals with many problems which are directly related both to our main question ‘Why do men live in society?’ and to the supplementary question ‘What do men gain by living under government?’; he discusses such issues as the relationship between ‘law’ and ‘order’, the question of ‘legitimacy’, and the concepts of ‘negative’ and ‘positive’ freedoms.
