Abstract
We may begin by considering some information from the ancient world. In ancient Greece, the normal wheat yield in Attica in the late fourth century B.C. was estimated1 at 0.9 tons/ha. Michell points out that much higher yields were obtained in Egypt, Babylonia and Sicily. For ancient Egypt a figure of 2 tons/ha. has been estimated.2
