Abstract

The port situation of Madagascar is characterised by a large number of poorly equipped lighterage installations and three ports with deep-water facilities, only one of which is modern and adequately equipped. The dispersion of ports along both coasts both reflects and contributes to the poorly integrated transport and economic structure of the island, which is, in turn, a major explanation for the relative stagnation of the Malagasy economy over at least the past three decades.
