Abstract
ATTENTION must now be turned to the Arabian peninsula, the birthplace of the religious tradition of Islam, today found in countries as diverse as Turkey, Pakistan, Indonesia, Malaya, India, Persia, China, the U.S.S.R., the older Mediterranean countries of North Africa, and in the newly emerging states of Africa south of the Sahara; a tradition which has left its mark on the culture and history of Europe, notably, though by no means exclusively, in Spain and the Balkans.
