Abstract
The fiftieth anniversary of the Balfour Declaration occurred in November 1967. Its publication in 1917 had passed with little comment in Britain, and Balfour went to his grave thinking it ‘the most worthwhile thing to which he had ever set his hand’.1 It was ironic that the same month should see the premature withdrawal of British troops from Aden with no hope of leaving a stable government behind.
