Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to attempt a clarification of the theory of substance which Aristotle had developed at the time when he wrote books Z, H, and 9 of the Metaphysics, by considering a passage where he puts forward a number of arguments against a certain doctrine about substance. Some of my conclusions could, I think, be supported by an examination of certain other passages in Z. But in this paper I confine my discussion to Z 13.
