Problems of Economic Development of Angola: Poles and Prospects

  • Chapter
Economic Development for Africa South of the Sahara

Abstract

The problems stemming from economic development are still among the most important topics of discussion in the world today.2 The subject itself is far wider and more complex than might appear at first sight since the human, social, and political aspects of eco nomic development must not be forgotten. It would naturally be much more convenient for economists if they could juggle with figures at leisure in a universe composed exclusively of products and quantities, but this it not possible. Instead, they have to attempt to improve conditions in poorer areas, and to prevent the imbalance that already exists from deteriorating. The task is, in fact, so urgent and important that it has been labelled the ‘twentieth century crusade’. The more highly developed countries are placing their sympathetic aid at the service of this crusade and are offering to become centres of technical, economic, and financial co-operation for the purpose of combating the threat of famine and under-development. International organizations of a regional or world wide character are studying the problems more and more closely, and can now offer assistance to almost every nation on a scale which, although it may appear minute in relation to world demand, is, nevertheless, the outcome of praiseworthy endeavour.
