Abstract
Before studying this unit you should have a basic understanding of how ions and molecules move across membranes (Unit 6). Many examples of communication between cells have to do with homeostasis, so you should understand the principles of this (Unit 15). This unit introduces the roles of chemical signalling molecules like hormones. Signalling molecules have important roles in animal reproduction, defence and development (Units 13,23 and 25). Communication involving the nervous system is covered in Unit 17.

Alberts, B., Bray, D., Lewis, J., Raff, M., Roberts, K. and Watson, J.D. Molecular Biology of the Cell (3rd ed.) (New York: Garland, 1994). An enormous but excellent textbook which puts the reader in touch with current ideas without too much pain on the way. A long chapter on cell signalling is especially useful for its treatment of signal transduction within the cell (G proteins, enzyme cascades, second messengers and so on).
Guyton, A.C. and Hall, J.E. Textbook of Medical Physiology (9th ed.) (Philadelphia: Saunders, 1996). I like this hefty textbook of human physiology for its thoroughness and clear, no-frills diagrams.
Guyton, A.C. Human Physiology and Mechanisms of Disease (5th ed.) (Philadelphia: Saunders, 1992). Effectively a shorter, boiled-down version.
Schmidt-Nielsen, K. Animal Physiology: Adaptation and Environment (4th ed.) (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1990). One of the all-time great textbooks! Exciting, authoritative and easy to read, it puts animal physiology in the context of the environment.
Withers, P.C. Comparative Animal Physiology (Fort Worth: Saunders, 1992). More detailed than Schmidt-Nielsen, with wider-ranging examples: the inevitable cost is that it is a less easy read.
