Abstract
Consider this previously unpublished case reported to one of my colleagues in a recent research project (Snell, Chak and Taylor 1996). It concerned an ethical dilemma faced by ‘Simon’ (fictional name), a 35-year-old deputy accounting manager with eight years’ service at ‘Sunny’, a Japanese-owned trading company with a branch in Hong Kong. Sunny is managed by expatriate Japanese, but employs mainly local Hong Kong Chinese staff — Simon is one of the latter. Simon’s account of his ethical dilemma is given below:
