Abstract
I am writing this only a few days after the funeral of a friend. At least 250 people were present, and most of us knew each other. It was said during the service, and we all knew it for ourselves: Gary had a remarkable gift of making every person feel important. He managed to bring out the best in everybody. One person said that he changed her life in half a minute by just casually asking the right question. Another person admitted that he never knew friendship until Gary came into his life. Many years ago, Gary put me in charge of a working group when I had never done anything like that before. This simple act of trust and addressing the potential rather than only the visible was for me the beginning of a sense of appreciating myself and others differently.
