Abstract
Nationalism has been the most powerful political force in the world for two centuries. The appeal of the nationalist ideology in so many different historical and geographical settings may be explained by its protean nature: it readily adapts its shape to fit the circumstances. This extraordinary versatility derives from the manifold components that constitute the basic idea.
