Abstract

There are many stages along the way to being a fluent speaker of a new language. Some learners like to plunge into conversations, improving the finer points of pronunciation and expression as they go. Others prefer to work hard at the right pronunciation, intonation and stress from the start so that they are well prepared when they start talking. Whatever your general approach, the main advice in this chapter is that people learn to speak by speaking, so make the opportunities and start.
