Literature in the Language Course

  • Marilyn Lewis
Part of the How to Study book series (HS)

The study of literature is valuable for its own sake. In addition, when students are learning a foreign language it serves multiple purposes. It introduces them to new ways of thinking and viewing the world as well as providing them with extensive passages of language in a range of contexts. This chapter explores the purposes for studying literature in the language class and suggests some ways that students can use literature to improve their general language development.
