Abstract

Most of this book has been concerned with ensuring that structures do not fail through lack of strength. In limit state terms this is the ultimate limit state of collapse. However, one serviceability limit state which can influence the size of structural members is deflection. It is particularly a problem with long span beams, cantilevers and members made from material with low elastic modulus such as timber or fibre composites.
