Managing Yourself

Part of the book series: Essentials of Nursing Management ((ENMS))

Abstract

A nursing or midwifery qualification that results in registration on a part of the UKCC Register for Nurses, Midwives and Health Visitors is a great achievement for every individual. For most of us who embark on a nursing or midwifery career, the challenges of that initial programme of study are great as the demands of being a student, learning in practice placements and preparing for professional practice impact on every aspect of our lives. Expectations are high — clinically, academically and professionally — from those influencing and responsible for the programmes, and students often feel great pressure during their three or four years of study as they prepare for registration.

NB The term ‘practitioner’ is used in the text to refer collectively to nurses, midwives and health visitors, that is, all registered nurses.
