Abstract

As decision-support systems have evolved over time, they have become more sophisticated in terms of the way that they:

  • Subdivide the road network into sections

  • Use intervention levels to determine treatments

  • Enable the analysis of different numbers of treatment options per section

  • Carry out economic analysis

  • Prioritise decisions when there are budget constraints.

It is common to group systems as ‘first’, ‘second’, or ‘third’ generation, depending on their approach to addressing the above issues. The general characteristics of each group are described in Table 7.1.
