Abstract

The most frequently used, and possibly the earliest used, structural element is the beam. The primary function of a beam is to transfer vertical loading to adjacent structural elements such that the load can continue its path through the structure to the foundations. Loading can be imposed on a beam from one or several of a number of sources, e.g. other secondary beams, columns, walls, floor systems or directly from installed plant and/or equipment. In most cases static loading will be considered the most appropriate for design purposes, but dynamic and fatigue loading may be more critical in certain circumstances.
