Abstract
If any feature set Belfast apart from Bristol and Dublin it was the tradition of intercommunal violence which continues to this day. Other cities had a reputation for sectarianism but nowhere was it on a scale to match Belfast. The improving living conditions within the city did nothing to reduce violent sectarian divisions.
