Abstract

Art and design have a long history. Qualified designers and artists have the advantage of an education in design history and can draw on tried and tested examples. For some people working in electronic publishing, the act of ‘design’ involves browsing around until they find an element that works, deciphering how it works, and then incorporating that element into their own page. Web site authors sometimes just grab code from existing pages. This approach often results in a series of unrelated message elements and is not a strategy for design.
