Abstract
Early in December 1944, a draftee from Chicago was readying himself for the sea voyage from Boston to Europe. The soldier was married and had two children, and only curiosity could somewhat assuage his grief before he boarded the Mount Vernon. “The thought of going to Europe,” he wrote, “despite its hazards, awakens my imagination. To me, the Old World will be a new world. A forward-looking spirit consoles me.”1
