Abstract

Employers may be classified according to whether they are small or large; in the private sector or the public sector; in the primary, secondary or tertiary sector; whether they are conglomerates, bestriding sectors and markets; whether they are nationally based with or without multinational connections, or whether they are foreign-based multinationals with locally or nationally based units. The characteristics, in these terms, displayed by an employer, are said to have some effect on the nature of industrial relations in their organisation.
