Abstract

The opening to Chapter 1 pointed to the paradox of large numbers of people belonging to apparently unpopular organisations. Recent years have seen a substantial decline in trade union membership. No doubt the perceptive reader will predict that several explanations exist as to why this should be so. Even more perceptive readers will anticipate that the decline in membership could be put into the kind of historical context which makes it possible to argue that there has been no decline in relative terms.
