Marxism and the political economy of health

  • Chapter
Social Theory and Nursing Practice

Part of the book series: Sociology and Nursing Practice Series ((SNP))

Abstract

The focus of this chapter is on the ideas of Karl Marx (1818–83) and how they have influenced our understanding of health and health care. As the chapter’s tide indicates, Marxist approaches to health care emphasise that they cannot be divorced from wider political considerations, which are in turn deeply influenced by economic arrangements.
