Freehold Land

In English land law, the ‘biggest and best’ way of owning land is to own the ‘freehold estate’. At this point, the ancient historical roots of modern English land law show through the ground: the origins of freehold land can take lawyers straight back to the conquest of England by William of Normandy in 1066. In theory, all the land in England and Wales is still owned by the Crown, with individuals holding interests in the Queen’s land.
