Abstract
It has been argued that the key to family empowerment is the giving of information (Robertson, 1995). The success of ambulatory care in practice depends on high levels of communication with families. This stance is ratified throughout the UK Children’s Charter (Department of Health, 1996), which identifies information-giving as a fundamental right of children and their families. Furthermore, Whiting (1997) has stated that children’s nurses should focus their activities on the promotion of health rather than on sickness.
