Abstract
In this chapter we shall briefly introduce some broad ethical approaches and then discuss the main kinds of environmental ethic. Themes introduced in this chapter will reappear in various guises in later chapters. In Chapters 5 and 6 we shall introduce some general environmental principles such as sustainable development and the precautionary principle. These have ethical roots, which are linked to political and economic concerns, thus providing bridges between ethics and the law.
