Suddenly, and somewhat unexpectedly, as the Soviet Union dissolved national independence fell into the laps of the Soviet Socialist Republics of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia. They achieved this political pinnacle without the need to fight a long and hard resistance war for freedom, gaining it by a quirk of history. The stifling cloak of communism rapidly fell away, to be replaced by rabid nationalism and adventurism. Instead of concentrating on creating viable, liberal, democratic nation states on the approved Western pattern, with trade and cooperation between them, they instead chose isolation, aggression and ethnic cleansing.
