Abstract
At the end of this chapter you will be able to:

Describe why it is that humans have a need to affiliate.

Identify some of the factors which influence our choice of people with whom to affiliate.

Show an understanding of balance theory and social exchange theory in relation to affiliation.

4.
Distinguish between friendship and love and between different kinds of love.

5.
Understand how relationships develop.

6.
Appreciate some of the factors which may lead to the break up of a relationship and the consequences of such a break up.
