Abstract

Communications technology at the local, metropolitan and wide area levels is improving and, as we have seen in Chapter 1, this is having a major impact on systems solutions in general and on distributed computing in particular. But in order to capitalize on the benefits new technology offers, we need to undertake the re-engineering of business processes — and this demands far greater flexibility and responsiveness from the information systems specialists than has been the case in the past.
