Abstract
This chapter focuses upon the way in which dominant assumptions on the composition of ‘the community’ in Britain are challenged by the presence of many diverse ‘communities’. This also presents a challenge for the planning and provision of care if it is to meet the real needs of people from different communities. It will be argued here that many mistaken beliefs which underpin practice can be seen to exist, and these must be addressed in order to meet minority needs.
