Abstract

This chapter explores the meaning of the term ‘empowerment’, examining its relationship with neighbouring concepts such as self-help and user-led activities. In the process, the intrinsically problematic features of ideas about empowerment are highlighted. This leads to the conclusion that it is more realistic to talk about versions of empowerment, rather than about a unitary and unambiguous concept.
