By the end of this chapter you should:

  • appreciate that the socialisation role of schools and training programmes can be seen in a negative light;

  • be familiar with Marxist views on the allocation role of education and training;

  • understand conflict interpretations of the vocational role of education;

  • be able to assess Marxist approaches to the role of education and training;

  • have reflected on student answers to an exam question;
