Abstract

There can be little doubt that the uncertainty which epitomises the world of work today as experienced by professionals is the direct result of the interaction of a wide variety of conflicting changes in economic conditions, social values, rapid information flows, technological changes and those associated with the socio-political scene. The origins of many of these changes lie in:

  • demand for better choice and better quality of service provision;

  • the demand for market share and jobs from evolving provider competition across geographic boundaries;

  • demands for equality;

  • demands for improved social and environmental conditions together with adequate rewards for the work undertaken.
