Abstract

From about 1900 the Netherlands Royal Navy (NRN) prepared for war with the Imperial Japanese Navy. In 1942 it lost this war and when it returned to the East Indies in 1945 it was to confront there a totally different opponent. The Indonesian nationalists had established an independent state, directly in the wake of the Japanese surrender. Soon they were fighting the Dutch, with diplomatic means and with guerilla techniques. The Dutch Colonial Army, together with reinforcements sent from the Netherlands, bore the brunt of the counter-guerilla operations. The NRN assisted their efforts, mainly by blockading the enemy-held coasts.
