Abstract
As part of a major programme of change in a manufacturing company a cellular based system was introduced in the factory, commercial areas and engineering design activities. The aim of the new system was to improve local control of contract times and costs. To gain the maximum advantage from the new organisation it was obvious a change to working practices was needed. The requirement was for working practices emphasising individual empowerment and increased responsibility. In dealing with the human issues the process of change demonstrated the need for an evolving style of leadership guiding the development of working practices in the cells. The paper charts the parallel processes of change to working practice and management style. In addition it highlights the subsequent improvements achieved by the business.
