Summary
Real-time cutting force control is a very straight-forward way of improving safety, performance and quality in turning. This paper presents and compares two different solutions to robust PI-controller design that handle the non-linear and time-variable properties of the cutting process in two different ways. Both approaches are based on the internal model control (IMC) design method, but differ in the process modeling. Gain scheduling with respect to spindle speed is used to guarantee robustness and good control performance over the entire operating range. The paper includes a theoretical analysis, computer simulations and experimental test results.
