Abstract
In the course of their work, midwives will meet the rich and the poor and will observe how all types of people adapt to the major life changes associated with pregnancy and childbirth. Sociologists offer explanations and some keys to understanding inequality, poverty and deprivation. Such explanations can help midwives to understand the context of care, to accept in a non-judgemental way individuals’ life-styles, and enable them to offer appropriate care to all women and their families.
