Abstract
American Indians (also referred to as Natives, Native Americans, or Amerindians) live in various parts of Canada, the United States, and Central and South America. Their existence on the American continents is estimated to date from as early as 40,000 to 20,000 BCE. Some groups, such as the Sioux, Crow, and Comanche, were primarily nomadic, hunting societies; others, such as the Hopi and Algonquin, developed advanced agricultural societies. Each of these societies spoke a different language and evolved a different way of life. Even tribes living in close proximity to each other differed significantly in linguistic dialects, beliefs, and ceremonies.
