Abstract

Few religions, if any, have been so badly represented and widely misunderstood by Westerners as Islam, which was established in Arabia in the seventh century as a result of the preaching and teaching of the Prophet Muhammad. In spite of the geographic proximity of the Islamic world to Western cultures, and the many ways in which Islam resembles Christianity and Judaism, misunderstandings have persisted on several levels.
