Abstract
Christianity emerged in ancient Palestine in the shadow of the Roman Empire, which was at its zenith. The Romans had conquered Palestine in 63 bce, and by the time of the birth of Jesus, their empire had imposed a political unity on the lands bordering the Mediterranean that greatly facilitated the spread of various religions.
